What is this: the system landscape that customer contact runs through at an e-commerce or retail organisation, and the connections between those systems. The line shows which data flows, the colour shows what for, the label shows who owns it. Click a system to see which connections attach to it; the rest fades out. Click a number for the details of one connection.
Why the model: the order side (webshop, ERP, warehouse, delivery) and the customer contact side have grown apart almost everywhere. On the red lines nobody talks to anybody: the ticketing system does not see the order (24), telephony delivers no call (21) and carriers mail into the inbox (22). That is where complaints, damage and warranty get stuck.
How to use it: put your own landscape next to this one and decide, per connection, who owns it. Each connection lists the swimlanes that run over it — those describe the process itself. Dotted cards are systems not every organisation keeps separate.
What runs, when, and who owns it. Grey label = owner not yet known.
Every system has an owner. The lines between them usually do not — and that is where tickets get stuck.

An agent who has to search the ERP (24), a phone call that leaves no trace (21), a supplier who never reports back (15). None of those three belongs to one party, which is why nobody fixes them.
While these are open you cannot close the landscape. Every answer settles one connection above.
